32 vs 64 bit August 1, 2005

  • A 32-bit machine can address a 32-bit memory space, meaning, 2^32 bytes, or 4 GB.
  • A 64-bit machine can address a 64-bit memory space, that is around 16 exabytes
  • Latest Intel Zeon’s can operate in 64 bit mode.
  • Intel Itanium 2 can was built for 64 bit computing.
  • Ofcouse you need 64 bit os too to take advantage.(Like Windows XP Professional x64) and port you applications as well.
  • From JVM 1.4.0 onwards you have a port for 64 bit platforms.
